Movie Illustrations

A couple illustrations, one that I've shown before, the other that is fresh. Here goes:

I posted the 'Juno' drawing a few posts back, and I've been playing around with the color ever since. People seem to prefer the sole figure at the top, but I've been throwing around ideas for some background design. After much gnashing of teeth, I decided on the plus signs below. Simple, but they also have a feature in the plot of the movie.
This one is a bit more formal, and I have no intention of adding color. The characters are H.W. and Daniel Plainview from P.T. Anderson's 'There Will Be Blood.' I wanted to creat a contrast between the two portraits, hence the greater use of shading on Plainview. The strongest feature for me was the cross-hatching on the clothing. I've employed it in the past, but this time it seemed to really work.

'The Ballad of Toby & Sara' 1st Issue Covers

These are the covers for the first issue of 'The Ballad of Toby & Sara.' The top will be the front cover, and the bottom will be the back cover since each cover corresponds to the timline of the story. Both will include a couple of spot covers. One step closer...

Illustration Friday-Stitch

Revisiting an old friend, Humpty Dumpty, for Illustration Friday. Oh dear...

'Juno'

No explanation here, right? Just a spot illustration for the movie 'Juno' (color to be added later). I've seen it twice, highest recommendation!

Froiberg, hopeless romantic

'October in the Chair'

A couple quick illustrations based on Neil Gaiman's short story 'October in the Chair,' included in his collection 'Fragile Things.' In the story, the months of the year sit around a campfire, and tell stories. A great read!

'The Brothers Karamazov' Illustrations

It's been a while since I tackled 'Karamazov' related images. These are some quick ink studies I did based on scenes from the book.

UFO! - Inked!

And - tada! - here is the inked version! Could there be a color version on the way? Stay tuned.

P.S. - As you can see, the aliens are speaking a foreign language (because, really, you wouldn't theoretically be able to understand an alien if you met one), but I'm not sure if I should provide a translation (because I wouldn't understand them either, theoretically). Would a translation be helpful?

UFO!

So, the school I attend is doing this school wide Design project, working from the theme 'UFO.' These are the pencils of my take on it, working with the blue pencil method that I developed with the Karamazov illustrations. The final version will be inked, and (hopefully) colored. Keep checking the blog for future versions!

Brothers Karamazov-Ink Tests

Here are the ink tests I did using the Brother Karamazov sketches below. I used, from the left to right, Winsor & Newton Series 7 brushes (sizes 1 and 2), a Hunt 102 Crowquill, and a Niji Watercolor brush (somewhat like a Series 7, except you don't have much brush variation, but the ink is kept in a reservoir so you don't have to continually dip it in ink).

I think each has its own unique qualities and uses, but I think the strongest among these is the Series 7 drawings. They have a really nice, strong, clean presence. Not saying I'm perfect yet with the brush, but I think I have a good start.
